Description

The Durand® is a precision two-part opener built for one demanding job: extracting old, fragile corks whole and intact. A threaded helix anchors the core of the cork while two blades slide down between the cork and the neck, supporting its full length so it lifts out in a single piece rather than crumbling.

Invented in 2007 by engineering-trained collector Mark Taylor and named for renowned sommelier Yves Durand, it is trusted by collectors and professional sommeliers worldwide.

Designed for natural corks in bottles with an inside neck opening of approximately 3/4 inch. Not suitable for narrower necks or non-cork stoppers.

How It Works

Insert the HelixInsert the BladesWork the Blades DownTwist and Remove the Cork

Screw the Helix into the center of the cork until the Stabilizer Bar rests against the top of the cork or bottle.

With the Blades on either side of the Stabilizer Bar, insert first the long then the short Blade between the cork and the bottle.

Press down alternately over each Blade using the Handle, rocking it until the bottom of the Handle rests against the top of the Stabilizer Bar.

Hold the bottle securely. With the other hand, grasp the Stabilizer Bar and Handle together, twist, then pull upward slowly while continuing to twist to remove the cork.

Frequently asked questions

What is The Durand® and what problem does it solve?

The Durand® is a two-part wine opener engineered specifically to remove old, fragile corks from fine vintage wines without breaking them. Invented in 2007 by engineering-trained wine collector Mark Taylor, it combines a corkscrew and an ah-so opener so that even the most delicate corks come out whole and intact, preserving the wine's integrity.

How is The Durand® different from a regular corkscrew?

A standard corkscrew grips only the center of the cork, which often causes aged corks to crumble or break. The Durand® pairs a helix that anchors the cork's core with two blades that slide down between the cork and the bottle neck, supporting the cork along its full length. This combined action lets you twist and lift the cork out in one intact piece.

What types of bottles can I use The Durand® on?

The Durand® is designed for older, fragile natural corks in bottles with an inside neck opening of approximately 3/4 inch. It should not be used on bottles with an inside neck diameter smaller than 3/4 inch, and it is not intended for non-cork stoppers.

How do I get the best results with very old or fragile corks?

Even with the stability the Durand® provides, the oldest and most delicate corks benefit from a little added care. As you reach the final stages of removal, use your fingers on the cork near the neck of the bottle to gently 'nurse' it out. This extra support helps keep the most fragile corks fully intact.

Is The Durand® trusted by professionals?

Yes. Since its introduction in 2007, The Durand® has earned international acclaim and is used by collectors and sommeliers worldwide. It is named in honor of Yves Durand, a world-renowned sommelier, and its patented design and consistent performance have been praised in national and international media.

Is The Durand® a patented, protected design?

Yes. The Durand® is protected by patents in numerous countries, including the United States (Nos. 7,237,455 and 7,290,463), the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong, and a design patent in China. This reflects the originality of its two-part engineering.

Who makes The Durand®?

The Durand® is made by Wining Taylors, LLC, a family company. Founder Mark Taylor grew the business from a small startup into a worldwide success with the support of his daughter Janet Taylor. Upon his retirement, his daughters Janet Taylor and Elaine Taylor-Klaus took the reins, continuing to innovate while honoring the brand's craftsmanship and integrity.

Are there any safety precautions I should know about?

The cork container supplied with The Durand® contains small magnets that could present a choking hazard to small children, so keep both the tool and the container out of the reach of children. While The Durand® has proven highly effective at removing old, fragile corks, Wining Taylors, LLC makes no guarantee that it will successfully remove every cork.
